Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools PDF
By:California. Department of Education
Published on 2001 by

The arts convey knowledge and meaning not learned through the study of other subjects. Study of the arts employs a form of thinking and a way of understanding based on human judgment, invention, and imagination. This publication represents a strong consensus on the skills, knowledge, and abilities in dance, music, theater, and visual arts that all students should be able to master at each grade levels, pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, in California public schools. The standards were built on the components of arts education contained in the |Visual and Performing Arts Framework for California,| which was adopted in 1996. The strands and standards in this publication describe the content that students need to master by the end of each grade level or cluster of grades (grades 9 through 12 at the proficient and advanced levels). For each arts discipline the content standards are grouped under five visual and performing arts strands: artistic perception; creative expression; historical and cultural context; aesthetic valuing; and connections, relations, and applications. At each grade level, pre-kindergarten through grade eight, content standards are specified for each strand. For students in grades 9 through 12, the proficient level of achievement can be attained at the end of one year of high school study within an arts discipline after the student has attained the achievement level required of all students in grade eight. The publication is organized according to the four arts disciplines: dance, music, theater, and visual arts. A glossary of key terms is provided at the end of the standards for each of the arts. Making the Scene PDF
By:Oscar Gross Brockett,Margaret Mitchell,Linda Hardberger
Published on 2010-02-15 by Tobin Fdtn for Theatre Arts

Theatrical scene design is one of the most beautiful, varied, and lively art forms. Yet there are relatively few books on the subject, and almost none for a general audience that combine expansive scholarship with lavish design. Making the Scene offers an unprecedented survey of the evolving context, theory, and practice of scene design from ancient Greek times to the present, coauthored by the world's best-known authority on the subject and enhanced by three hundred full-color illustrations. Individual chapters of the book focus on Greece, Rome, Medieval Europe (including liturgical drama, street pageants, festival outdoor drama, Spanish religious drama, and royal entries), the Italian Renaissance, eighteenth-century Europe, Classicism to Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism, Modernism, and contemporary scene design. Making the Scene's authors review everything from the effects of social status on theatre design to the sea changes between Classicism, Romanticism, and Naturalism and the influence of perspective-based thought. Particularly intriguing is their rediscovery of lost tricks and techniques, from the classical deus ex machina and special effects in coliseums to medieval roving stage wagons and the floating ships of the Renaissance to the computerized practices of today's theatres. Such ingenious techniques, interwoven with the sweeping beauty of scene design through the ages, combine with the keen scholarship of Oscar Brockett and Margaret Mitchell to create a book as involving as the art it showcases.

Balinese Dance, Drama & Music PDF
By:I Wayan Dibia,Rucina Ballinger
Published on 2012-11-27 by Tuttle Publishing

Bali has long been known for its deep spirituality and extraordinary artistic heritage. The dances, dramas, puppetry and music of Bali are more than icons for the island; they are part and parcel of life—as expressions of devotion to the gods, as entertainment, and as a way of instilling cultural values on each generation. Balinese Dance, Drama & Music is a lavishly illustrated introduction to Bali's celebrated temple orchestra, the gamelan, to its ancient shadow puppet theater, and to a myriad of traditional and contemporary dances and dance-dramas that continue to enthrall locals and visitors alike. Ideal reading for visitors to the island as well as for anyone interested in Balinese culture, the book presents the history and function of each performance genre, with illustrations and photographs to aid in identification. Introductory sections discuss the way performing arts are learned in Bali and the basic Balinese values which are passed on in these forms, as well as some of the basic religious and cultural tenets that are expressed in the arts and the functions of the forms themselves. Different sections describe particular forms of performing arts, such as Gong Angklung, Legong, the Keraton dance, Wayang Kulit, and the new phenomenon of women's gamelan groups, the evolution of each and the place it has in the culture of Bali. The book is enhanced with a bibliography and discography and over 150 specially prepared watercolors of Balinese performers and performances.

Sanford Meisner was one of the best known and beloved teachers of acting in the country. This book follows one of his acting classes for fifteen months, beginning with the most rudimentary exercises and ending with affecting and polished scenes from contemporary American plays. Written in collaboration with Dennis Longwell, it is essential reading for beginning and professional actors alike. Throughout these pages Meisner is a delight—always empathizing with his students and urging them onward, provoking emotion, laughter, and growing technical mastery from his charges. With an introduction by Sydney Pollack, director of Out of Africa and Tootsie, who worked with Meisner for five years. |This book should be read by anyone who wants to act or even appreciate what acting involves. Like Meisner's way of teaching, it is the straight goods.|—Arthur Miller |If there is a key to good acting, this one is it, above all others. Actors, young and not so young, will find inspiration and excitement in this book.|—Gregory Peck

Performance on the Edge PDF
By:Johannes Birringer
Published on 2002-06-01 by A&C Black

Performance on the Edge takes the reader on a journey across geographical borders and conceptual boundaries in order to map out the new territory of contemporary theatre, dance, media arts and activism. Working across social, cultural and political fault lines, the book explores performance as both process and contact, as the commitment to political activism and the reconstruction of community, as site-specific intervention into the social and technological structures of abandonment, and as the highly charged embodiment of erotic fantasies.Performance on the Edge addresses the politics of community-oriented and reconstructive artmaking in an era marked by the AIDS crisis, cultural and racial polarization, warfare, separatism and xenophobia. Provocatively illustrated with work from North and Central America and Eastern and Western Europe, the book challenges our assumptions about the relations between media and activism, technological imperatives and social processes and bodily identities and virtual communities.

On Refuge PDF
By:Richard Gough
Published on 1997 by Psychology Press

This work explores ideas about home and exile, site, location and migration - in relation to the artists themselves and to the forms at play in perfomance today. Performance has always been a nomadic occupation. Unwillingly or by choice artists find themselves positioned outside institutions as political, cultural and financial exiles; they choose or are forced to migrate, or deliberately situate themselves outside accepted structures and sites. The book looks at how these conditons affect the artist's work and considers how contemporay perfomance constitutes the conditions for its own production - and its own survival.
